This week, 125 teams from 14 Canterbury intermediate and middle schools gathered in venues across Christchurch for the annual CAIMS tournament for two days.
Nine sports were on offer this year, including badminton, basketball, football, hockey, netball, rugby sevens, squash, table tennis and volleyball.
Christchurch’s Heaton and Cobham Intermediate had the largest team entries with 20 and 18 respectively, while Ashburton Intermediate was the only school from out of Christchurch to compete with 9 teams in total.
For Ashburton Intermediate, this year’s CAIMS Tournament was the first time the school had entered a girls’ only rugby sevens team (Pictured Below in action against their boys team).
Although there was just one other girls’ team entered, the Ashburton girls had great fun playing some of the boys’ rugby teams, saying it was challenging because they were “rougher and tougher.”
Just four of the ten players in the team had played club rugby before, but the girls say they are looking forward to attending the Koru Games next month to play again.
Primary Sports Canterbury Sports Director Michael Wilson says it was great to see the participation across the nine sports, and is thankful for all the facilities and volunteers.
He congratulated all the adults that made the event possible, along with the students for “their hard work and determination to do their best.”
